  • Stargate SG-1: Season 7
    Matthew Rich 04 Jun 2005

Being the seventh season this DVD is mainly for fans of the series, however if you are unfamiliar with the story there are still several individual episodes that a first time viewer can enjoy especially if you are a Sci-fi fan.

This season see's the return of Daniel Jackson who was missing for season 6 (apart from several guest appearances). With his return the balance of the team is re-alligned and having the 4 original cast members back does seem to work better.

In total there are four 2-part episodes including the finale which was originally intended to be a feature film.

The boxset includes a lot of extras, with audio commentary for every episode by the director of the episode and other members of the cast and crew including Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) and Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter). There is also other behind the scenes footage including the "director series".

Overall this is a must have for a stargate fan, and other general Sci-fi fans should perhaps purchase the earlier seasons to catch up before purchasing season 7.

    Brooke 04 Jun 2005

I'd have to say that POTC is definatly when of the better movies that I have seen. Johnny Depp does an AWESOME job as Jack Sparrow which makes the whole movie. The movie has a fairly good solid story line which makes the movie easy to enjoy.Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom do pretty well also.Welcome aboard the Black Pearl Mates!

  • Dogville [2004]
    alex wardle 03 Jun 2005

Premiering at the 2003 Cannes film festival and going on to win best director for Lars Von Trier at the European film awards, Dogville (As with many of Von Trier's films) split the critics quite clearly. It tells the story of Grace (Nicole Kidman) who, on the run from the mob, comes upon a small town, who agrees to hide her-in exchange for some simple chores. However, as the townsfolk of the epinomynous 'Dogville' begin to get used to the power they have over Grace, things soon get out of control, and Grace's human rights are steadily taken from her. Dogville was filmed using Von Trier's own Dogme '95 manifesto (Search the google) and was filmed over 4 intensive weeks on a soundstage with buildings, non-essential props and rooms drawn in chalk on the ground-therefore stripping the material down to its bones-which relies mainly on the actor's ability to perform. And boy do they deliver. Kidman, gives in my opinion, to date, her best performance- a subtle and underplayed character with many complex underlying idiosyncrasies. Added to this, a truly amazing ensemble cast and a beautiful, but simple score-Dogville is a must for fans of Von Trier, but also for fans of some heavy-weight acting. The dvd also has a revealing extra as, throughout the filming period, Von Trier demanded that the actors at the end of each working day, 'confess' to a big-brother style diary room camera-which provides a fascinating insight into the workings of such a production. This film is quite simply, intriguing in conception, but also breathtaking and intense in its delivery. Look out for follow-up film 'Manderlay'due later this year.

  • Mask [1985]
    alex wardle 03 Jun 2005

This drama based around the true story of a young man with severe facial deformities won Cher her first best actress oscar nomination - and deservedly so.The story, though could have turned into soppy rubbish, is treated realistically by Bogdanovich and, because of the harsh mother of the young boy performed expertly by Cher in an intense and complex portrayal, this film excells in the field of 'made for tv movie', and set the standard for the ones to come. With excellent support from eric stoltz, Sam Elliot and Laura Dern, 'Mask' is an unsentimental but heartbreaking tribute to anyone who has ever been different, but not given up, and fought against it.

  • The Cell [2000]
    alex wardle 03 Jun 2005

Panned by critics in the uk and us, but a box office number 1 none-the-less, this Tarsem Singh physoclogical thriller starring the unfortunate Jennifer Lopez, is, despite its loose story and poor casting, still a real treat for the eyes- there is a beautifully rich colour palette used by Singh and the cinematography is lovely at times-if not a little jarring. Added to that a discordant and complex score by Howard Shore (of Lord Of the rings fame), the cell, though not perfect, is a great example of how, with the right tools, amazing imagery can be created and genuinely intriguing thoughts can arise in one's head.

  • Stargate SG-1: Season 1 [1997]
    Geoff Walters 02 Jun 2005

You will not find a better sci-fi series than this....Much better than the film...Personally I am gripped by the series...Jack O'Neil adds a special touch to the series bringing a sense of humour to the screen with his dry humour & lack of understanding when it comes to technolgy...A must buy series on dvd....Once you have seen one episode you will become a huge fan & like me you won't miss an episode....Enjoy your viewing

  • The Shining [1980]
    Gavin M 01 Jun 2005

Brilliantly atmospheric, Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of the Stephen King novel is one of a handful of truly outstanding horror films. Although it has as many detractors as it has admirers, it is consistently voted as one of the best of its genre. Jack Nicholson gives one of the definitive performances of his career as Jack Torrance, hired to act as caretaker for a hotel which closes down during the harsh winters. The hotel has a bloody history associated with it however, and begins to take effect on Jack's mind... On the surface, the story seems like the usual horror hokum, but in the hands of Kubrick it becomes a tale thick with ominous music, spooky settings and bizarre imagery. With his extraordinary trademark visual style, he has fashioned the ultimate haunted house tale, never getting bogged down in exposition or resorting to hackneyed scare-jump tactics, and leaving interpretations of what we see up to the audience. The unease we experience as a result, combined with that wonderful classic ending, only makes this film all the more memorable.

The dvd features very good picture quality and excellent sound, plus Vivian Kubrick's contemporary 'making of' documentary with optional commentary and a trailer.

  • Cat In The Hat, The [2004]

Brilliant, original, witty and clever with amazing effects. Mike Myers is a genius. My two boys 6 and 4 love Cat in the hat almost as much as I do.

  • Lovejoy - Complete Series 1 [1986]
    Drew Miller 31 May 2005

This is a must-buy for all lovers of the 'god-hearted-rogue' or 'robin hood' type of characters.
Played by a wide and varied collection of well-known British Artists, the Lovejoy series is splendid in its vision of the British, and their love of antiques.
Taking you through the early days when Lovejoy is getting his reputation for being a 'divvy', in other words a natural talent in spotting real antiques from the dross.
This is an excellent set of dvd's with over 600 minutes of episodes and extras to keep you watching over and over again.
Like most classic British programmes of the date, you can repeatedly watch this set without becoming bored by the plots.
Timeless in its view of middle-England, this is a must for all viewers who like the 'baddy' as such, to beat the system, and prove that even big money can be useless against a person with the 'knowledge'.

  • Top Gun (Special Edition) [1986]
    Murray Forsyth 31 May 2005

A true classic, no one really knows why, the plot is pretty simple... Maverick (Cruise), a bit of a maverick (for want of a better word) perpetually showing off, is sent to the Academy.... where he eventually saves the day.

    But we all knew that.

It's the brilliantly cheesy comments, and cinematography that has written this in the history of greats. It would be possible to argue that it's incredibly easy to make a film to suit men about planes - just stick a film crew on an aircraft carrier for a day and you'll make a pretty good film.

This is one of those films you can watch again and again - you know exactly what's going to happen, but the chase seq5ences always keep you on the eidge of your seat.

...and of course, the soundtrack - consistently amazing.

And now its out in 2 shiny DVD's - what can go wrong, I haven't seen the second disc yet, but I'm sure its got lots of clips of planes, ships and some unseen bits.

One of my top ten, in fact I think I'll go and watch it again.

  • Constantine (Two Disc Edition) [2005]
    Heather 28 May 2005

This is a great film. It is very real and well acted by all the actors. It makes you think about life. Even though it was given bad press i think it was a fanatastic film and recommend it to anyone.

  • Sliders - Season 1 And Season 2
    Antony Harris 28 May 2005

Excellent, simply excellent. A cult classic, this is when sci-fi started to get good. A must buy!

  • Look Around You [2002]
    Anna 27 May 2005

This is a great DVD - its everything you used to hate about really old, boring out of date science programmes in secondary school made funny. Each episode has a different topic, ranging from 'ghosts' to 'calcium' but they are all very funny. The mickey take style comedy will appeal to anyone who has watched science programmes in school and laughed at the hair cuts of the paople doing really bad experiments. Well worth watching, with some truely classic lines.

  • Ocean's Twelve [2004]
    Martin Toddington 26 May 2005

Ocean's Eleven has just got one better. Ocean's Twelve is truly a work of art. The acting and chemistry between Clooney, Pitt and Damon make watching this sequel an absolute joy. It is rare to find a sequel which even measures up to the original, however it you enjoyed Ocean's Eleven, you will be bowled over by Ocean's Twelve. The story outline is pretty much the same. A group of guys attempt to pull off the impossible, however this time for different reasons. The film takes you on a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns and only at the end does it show it's mastery of plots and sub plots. This one of a few films that will leave you permenantly grinning at the cheekiness and professionalism of a group of characters and making you wish you knew Danny Ocean and his crew.
