  • ABBA - The Definitive Collection [2002]
    MARK KEARNS 16 Mar 2005

Here it is ~ the ultimate pop compilation from the ultimate pop group.
From track one to track 35 (yes, that's right ~ 35), this is pure, unabashed
quality. All the hits are included, plus a few choice album tracks and some
fascinating foreign language versions. All in all, a DVD to die for.
There's an appealing joyousness about the early tunes ("Waterloo", "Mamma Mia",
etc), while the later, more sophisticated tracks ("The Winner Takes It All",
"One of Us"), are testament to the awesome songwriting abilities of Benny and
Bjorn. Even the final, less successful singles ("Head Over Heels", "The Day
Before You Came") are of considerable merit and worthy of anyone's attention.
Of course, the beauty of this collection is that you get to see the band as
well as hear them. For the guys out there, there will never be enough videos
of Agnetha and Frida. And for the girls... well, Benny's beard is something
    to marvel at!
Abba were masters of the video as well as the record, and thus "The Definitive Collection" is a classic compilation that will disappoint no-one wise enough to pay £10.99 upwards for it. It's just wonderful to see the young foursome having such innocent fun in front of the camera during the brilliant "Bang-a-Boomerang". And while there's a tangible sadness about some of the latter clips (note the solemnity of "Under Attack"), they are still highly
    watchable.
A must-have not only for Abba fans, but also for those curious to learn more
    about this enduring phenomenom.

  • Only Fools And Horses - The Complete Series 1 To 7
    MARK KEARNS 16 Mar 2005

Don't miss this glorious opportunity to follow the development of possibly the best British comedy series we are ever likely to see. As box sets go, this is very, very special. It all started so unassumingly: the first series failed to set the world alight, despite being very funny. To the BBC's credit, it commissioned another run, and David Jason et al never looked back. "Only Fools and Horses" just got better and better. Each series surpassed the previous one, and most of the episodes featured in this fantastic collection were nothing short of hilarious. "Chance of a Lunchtime" is clever as well as funny, centering on a scam that any crook woud be proud of; "Yuppy Love" (perhaps the best-known and most-repeated episode) boasts a top-notch script and the funniest scene you could hope to see; and "Sickness and Health" demonstrates that writer John Sullivan is as adept at bringing a lump to the throat as he is at making you weak with laughter.
Although "Only Fools and Horses" has tailed off in recent years, this set reminds us just how brilliant it once was. If you want hours and hours of TV heaven, look no further. British comedy has never been better. Okay, this is no pocket money purchase... but it is difficult to imagine a better way of spending £49.99 upwards.
As Del Boy would say, you know it makes sense!

  • Suburbia [1983]
    DS 07 Mar 2005

Poorly acted and slow-paced, but also a very accurate depiction of the early 80s Los Angeles punk rock/hardcore scene. One to avoid for the majority, but if you have an interest in the subject matter then a very watchable movie and time capsule of the period when being a punk rocker was a real middle-finger response to a world that was going insane to many people. This movies attempts to address many of the social problems prevalent of the times, but never explores with any great depth. Broken families, runaway teenagers, incest, drug abuse... it's not an uplifting viewing. But the entire movie is redeemed by the quality live footage of seminal L.A. punk bands of the era, D.I., T.S.O.L. and The VANDALS. If you have an interest in those bands and the era they represent, well this movie is a priceless insight into the world of 1982 L.A. punk rock.

  • Apollo 13 [1995]
    Editor Review 26 Feb 2005

The best thing about Ron Howard's Apollo 13 masterpiece is that it really happened, making it even more nail-biting and inspiring. This true NASA tragedy tells the tale of averted disaster and heroism and is a stunning testament to the crew and scientists who showed great skill and bravery in the face of disaster.

What works beautifully in this film is its restraint, it's not a movie about bravado or fake heroics, but is honest and celebrates real courage. Tom Hanks isn't afraid of showing the gripping-fear resonating throughout the tale, but on the other hand the believable characters also lift the tone, giving a very realistic human element.

What's more, Howard doesn't get hung up on the hi-tech terminology, but manages to pull everything together and create suspense and drama when it all goes wrong. He uses news footage to give the movie urgency and despite a generous helping of cheesy one liners "We've never lost an American in space and we're sure not going to lose one on my watch", you can't deny that this film is a well-crafted recreation of the epic space journey.

    Verdict
Packed full of American pride, this slick and polished blockbuster will have you by the throat with its tension and spellbinding story - one of the finest feel-good films ever made!

  • The Grudge 2

A little slower than the first film, but some of the deaths are as freaky as hell.

  • Sledge Hammer - Series 1
    John Burton 11 Feb 2005

Why this series didn't get decent airtime in the UK is a mystery. Excellent spoof on the cop genre of the 80's. If you think that you will find a stereotypical, nihilistic cop who will blow up an entire building just to get rid of a roof top sniper funny - you'll love this!

It's been a long time coming but has been well worth the wait!

  • Laurel & Hardy - The Collection (21-disc Box Set) [1918]
    John Burton 11 Feb 2005

Contains almost all of the classics from the Hal Roach era. With b&w/colour options for most. Also foreign language versions + special bonus disk. A must for anyone who remotely likes Stan & Ollie.

  • School of Rock [2004]
    AJ London 09 Feb 2005

Brilliant vehicle for Jack Black to do what he does best - make us laugh! Far less 'Disney' orientated as many thought it would be School of Rock manages to tread that fine line between just providing family entertainment and throwing in some adult asides too. Well worth it - if just for one line right near the end!

  • Robocop [1988]
    AJ London 09 Feb 2005

Seminal 'ultra-violent' futuristic satire from Paul Verhoeven. An excellent European look at 80s, corporate America complete with digs at the State, greed and low-brow TV!

Another hit from Pixar's animation studio.

Even better than his previous stand-up. Lots of new material, VERY funny, actually tells stories rather than your quick run off the mill stand-up like Jimmy Carr (who i do actually like).

    Anonymous 16 Dec 2004

Much more of the true story added in the extended edition, which is very enjoyable. Masses of extras which often make the viewer feel as emotional as cast and crew, as it is the last time they are all togehter. A must have for any The Lord Of The Rings fan.
