  • The OC (Orange County) - The Complete First Season [2004]
    Brett Kemp 19 Mar 2005

On the face of it, this box set looks rather expensive, but it does comprise seven DVDs and a monster 27 episodes, running to over 18 hours. Suddenly it looks rather better value! And, of course, the OC is great. Let's be honest, it's not rocket science. It isn't even Six Feet Under. But it's a fun, well crafted drama with some good performances (especially Benjamin McKenzie and Adam Brody), great locations, good soundtrack (apart from the title music, which is pretty lame), and some enjoyable storylines, most of which revolve around teen angst, young love and the dysfunctional modern family. I'd say the OC falls into the category of lavish escapism. Think Beverly Hills 90210 but with better dialogue and a bigger production budget. Oh, and more fully developed characters. 99.9% of us don't live like the Cohens or the Coopers, but that's the point: when you're sitting at home, listening to the rain drumming on the windows, with the heating up high, it's great to escape to Orange County, where the sun always shines, everyone's buff (especially Mischa Barton's Marissa), and the token poor kid, around whom the story revolves, is an SAT whiz who looks like a toned Russell Crowe. It isn't Dostoevsky, but for enjoyable human drama and a touch of OTT the OC gets my vote.

  • Elektra [2005]
    R.Lloyd 19 Mar 2005

Although the critics slammed this for being rubbish, they obviously have no tast for hero movies, i would watch this again it was as good as, if not better than catwoman.

  • Marked For Death [1991]
    R.Lloyd 19 Mar 2005

One of the best things he has done, in my opinion definatly worth a watch for any action/martial arts fans out there. As a Steven Seagal fan i enjoyed it immensley.

  • Diamonds Are Forever [1971]
    Gary Barker 18 Mar 2005

The best of the James Bond films for me. Good plot, great action, great stunts, and even greater one liners (listen out for the classics like the collar and cuffs line). This film suffered because Connery was accused of coming back just for the money, but I genuinely think it was the pinnacle of the series. Connery is not older, but simply more mature, there's a big difference and he shows it in spades here.

  • Private's Progress [1956]
    Lester May 18 Mar 2005

Don't like war films? Don't like black and white movies? Cast aside your prejudices and pay attention! This film is very funny indeed and is in the Top 1000 in Halliwell's Film & Video Guide - and so it should be. The cast play their parts as work-dodging soldiers and colonel blimp type officers so seemingly typical of the period of National Service. Anyone who served in WW2 or did National Service will probably have seen this film but it's worth another viewing. For younger folk - those not of retirement age! - the movie affords a glimpse into a time gone by but with much humour. Terry-Thomas should be seen more: he is brilliant and his wincing at the barking of the sergeant-major and his "You lot are an absolute shower - a load of rotters" is priceless. Buy it or hire it - but do see "Private's Progress" and be grateful that the British Army never did bungle quite as much as this troop!

  • Why We Fight - Prelude To War
    Lester May 18 Mar 2005

This great documentary film is 53 minutes long and the first of the seven-part series "Why We Fight" by director Frank Capra - and this part is in the Top 1000 films listed in Halliwell's. It is well worth seeing, ideally as part of the whole series. As an introduction to the reasons for WW2, in a documentary form aimed at the 20-year-old GI about to sail to fight in Europe, this 1943 film is outstanding in its example of how to make a good documentary - interesting, simple to understand and worth staying awake for in that classroom cinema!

Faith is definitely the best character of the tv series! This is a great collection, which gives a small glimpse into the Faith persona!

  • Bambi (Disney)
    Graham Webster 17 Mar 2005

This has got to be my favourite Disney Movie, a simple movie about an orphaned baby deer, named Bambi.

Its such a sweet movie you cant help falling in love with 'Bambi' and all the other little characters including 'Thumper' the bunny and 'Flower' the shy skunk. Of course being Walt Disney its also a touching tale, really worth investing in.

Its a really heartwarming tale, but also sad too especially when little Bambi loses his mother, but it has exceedingly funny parts too, like where Bambi tries to walk across the ice and falls all over the place! It makes you feel like a kid again when you watch it!

For a good family Disney cartoon I would definitely recomend Bambi to anyone. It will keep kids and adults engrossed for ages.

  • Koala Brothers - A Letter For George
    David Bowen 16 Mar 2005

My 3 year old has now watched it practically every day since I bought it a couple of weeks ago and shows no sign of tiring of it. I like it too.

Would like the extra 'Neds scary night' to be off the main menu as well though rather than when you complete one of the quizes.

Love the parential control option that allows you to play 1, 2, 3... or all episodes one after the other.

  • Cruel Intentions [1999]
    Alan Rhodes 16 Mar 2005

Well what can be said about this film, it's gripping from start to finish which is helped by an all star cast which shows off all of their acting skills, and it's not just aimed at a teen audience viewers of a more mature attitude towards life will enjoy this film as well, even though the main storyline to the film includes sex conquests it"s a true love story and you really do feel for the characters in question, this film is a benchmark for any mid teenager and is a must see. What helps to make this film fantastic is it"s soundtrack all that can be said is superb, music is used in such away it trigger"s your own emotions to feel for the characters and if you have still got dry eye"s towards the end of this film then you haven"t understood what this film is about and you should watch it again, me myself have seen this film about 20 times now because it"s brings back good and bad memories of my own experiences in life. What more can be said.

  • Cellular [2004]
    Mike Mallett 16 Mar 2005

Brilliant movie. MUST WATCH. Some have compared this to Phonebooth. NO. This is much better & so much more full of suspense.
Acting GREAT both by Chris Evans (new to me) & Kim Basinger. I also liked the fact that there was no any unnessary swearing which often spoils a good movie for me.
DO BUY or rent this movie.

  • One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest [1975]
    George Washington 16 Mar 2005

Superb. perhaps lack the detail and depth the book possessed, but nevertheless a thoroughly enjoyable - if a little provoking - watch. I recommend this film to all those people who simply like films!!!

  • Bridget Jones 2: The Edge of Reason [2004]
    Brennie 16 Mar 2005

I did not see the first Bridget Jones film as I thought it was for the younger woman (I am a recycled teenager - i.e. over 50!) A neighbour gave me the film to watch and what a pleasant surprise - it was a totally feel-good film; sometimes I laughed out loud and I enjoyed first-class performances from Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth. I have never seen Hugh Grant in a film before, and although I think he is a good looking man, his acting skills are not much better than a wooden dummy in a shop window! A plus for the film is the music; spot on for what was happening on the screen. I was suffering from tooth ache the night I watched this film and it definitely took my mind of things for a while.

  • Man On Fire (Two Disc Special Edition) [2004]
    Ovended 16 Mar 2005

Set in Mexico City, the story of a washed up ex-serviceman with a drink problem who becomes bodyguard to a young girl with rich parents. The storyline is fairly obvious and the film, although watchable, gives no surprises with it's bland storyline.
