  • The Manchurian Candidate [DVD]The Manchurian Candidate | DVD | (31/07/2017) from £12.98   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

You will never find a more chillingly suspenseful, perversely funny, or viciously satirical political thriller than The Manchurian Candidate, based on the novel by Richard Condon (author of Winter Kills). The film, withheld from distribution by star Frank Sinatra for almost a quarter-century after President Kennedy's assassination, has lost none of its potency over time. Former infantryman Bennet Marco (Sinatra) is haunted by nightmares about his platoon having been captured and brainwashed in Korea. The indecipherable dreams seem to centre on Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey), a decorated war hero but a cold fish of a man whose own mother (Angela Lansbury, in one of the all-time great dragon-lady roles) describes him as looking like his head is "always about to come to a point". Mrs Bates has nothing on Lansbury's character, the manipulative queen behind her second husband, Senator John Iselin (James Gregory), a notoriously McCarthyesque demagogue. --Jim Emerson

Adapted from Arthur Pinero's relentlessly popular stage farce The Magistrate Those Were the Days was a perfect early vehicle for the comedic brilliance of Will Hay. Hay's feature-length debut is a typically entertaining study of the upstanding but ineffectual magistrate Mr Poskett while a youthful John Mills is the 20-year-old stepson who must pretend to be 15 to preserve the secret of his mother's falsified age; Angela Baddeley and veteran character-comedians Claude Allister H.F. Maltby and George Graves are among an impressive supporting cast. Presented in a brand-new digital transfer from the original film elements this rare cinematic gem - directed by former variety star Thomas Bentley - notably includes a wonderful evocation of the atmosphere of a 1890s music hall with Lily Morris and Harry Bedford among a number of leading acts featured. Three side-splittingly funny comedies including Anger Management Groundhog Day and So I Married An Axe Murderer. Anger Management: Dave Buznik (Adam Sandler) is usually a mild-mannered non-confrontational guy. But after an altercation aboard an airplane he is remanded to the care of anger management therapist Dr. Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson) who could probably use some anger management himself. Now Dave is really mad! Groundhog Day: Bill Murray is at his wisecracking best in this riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life! Teamed with a relentlessly cheery producer (Andie MacDowell) and a smart aleck cameraman TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney Pennsylvania to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. On his way out of town Phil is caught in a giant blizzard - which he himself actually failed to predict - and finds himself stuck in a small town hell. Just when things couldn't get worse they do! Phil wakes the next morning to find that it's Groundhog Day all over again. And again. And again. During the recurring 24 hour nightmare Phil starts to realise that he can also use it to his advantage; to re-write the events of his day and to generally have a whale of a time. But manipulating his day to capture the one woman he really wants is not quite so easy... So I Married An Axe Murderer: Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) is a love-shy poet living in San Francisco who frequents neighborhood coffee houses reciting his tortured odes to unrequited love. Burned by a string of failed relationships Mackenzie's fear of commitment has intensified into outrageous extremes of paranoia. When he finds himself falling for the sweet-faced butcher (Nancy Travis) at his local meat shop he sees it as a final chance for love to overcome his painful cynicism. Feeling he has squelched his nagging fears Mackenzie marries the woman. But his anxiety quickly manifests itself in the conviction that his wife is actually an infamous axe murderer whose antics are described in juicy detail in each week's issue of the Weekly World News...

  • Mr. Popper's Penguins [Blu-ray]Mr. Popper's Penguins | Blu Ray | (27/02/2012) from £15.15   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Based on the 1938 book of the same name by Richard and Florence Atwater, Mr. Popper's Penguins is a comedy about how the surprise appearance of a penguin at a New York businessman's door turns his life completely upside down, while simultaneously teaching him an important lesson about the value of family. Far from the small-town painter featured in the book, the film's Mr. Popper is a real estate developer who lives in an exclusive apartment on Park Avenue, has his sights set on becoming a partner in his firm, and is an every-other-weekend father to his two children. A ruthless developer with no time for anything but business, Mr. Popper resolves to deal with his father's parting gift of a penguin by getting rid of the annoying bird as quickly as possible. That process proves much more difficult than expected, even with the help of his ultra-efficient assistant Pippi, who speaks primarily in p's, and Mr. Popper soon winds up with six penguins. Even more unexpected is how markedly those penguins begin to affect the relationship between Mr. Popper and his children and how that change affects the rest of Mr. Popper's life. Jim Carrey's performance as Mr. Popper is very good--he capitalises on the many comic opportunities afforded by the idea of keeping penguins in a New York apartment while showing an uncharacteristic restraint that's quite refreshing. Ophelia Lovibond is quite comical as Pippi and Angela Lansbury also makes a strong appearance as one of Mr. Popper's potential business clients. As Pippi would say, the premise of the power of the penguin to promote personal prosperity and perpetuate personal peace positively prevails in Mr. Popper's Penguins.
