  • Mad Max Trilogy [1979]Mad Max Trilogy | DVD | (01/10/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £17.99

Mad Max: ""Who are they?"" asks the burly leader of a pack of motorcycle savages. Before the dust settles and the last piston throbs he'll especially know who one of them is. So will movie fans. Mel Gibson gave notice that he was a name to reckon with in the revved-up trend-setting first of Gibson's Mad Max collaborations with filmmaker George Miller. Gibson portrays Max Rockansky; the fearless leather-suited cop waging war with kill-crazy bikers who targeted his family. It is a war that must be seen to be believed a road-scorching neo-punk take-no-prisoners combat set in a post-apocalyptic Australia. In the end a lone man travels a ribbon of highway now free of the un-roadworthy a highway leading Gibson to stardom. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior: In the annals of action movies few can compere with Mad Max 2 a full-throttle epic of speed and carnage that rockets you into a dreamlike landscape where the post-nuclear future meets the mythological past. More simply its also one of the most mind-blowing stunt movies ever made. Before he took aim in three Lethal Weapons and starred on 1994's Maverick Mel Gibson had already made his mark on movie history as Max the heroic loner who drives the roads of outback Australia in an unending search for gasoline. Arrayed against him and the other scraggly defenders of a fuel-depot encampment are the bizarre warriors commanded by The Humungus notorious for never taking prisoners when they can pulverise them instead. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome: Two men enter. One man leaves. That's the law in Bartertown's Thunderdome arena. But lawmaker Auntie Entity will soon add another: Don't get Max mad! Mel Gibson returns for the third time as the title hero who takes on the barbarians of the post-nuclear future- and this time becomes the saviour of a tribe of lost children. Tina Turner steals what's left of the screen as Auntie Entity a power-mad dominatrix determined to use Max to tighten her stranglehold on Bartertown. Directors George Miller and George Ogilvie deliver another rousing final apocalypse-on-wheels and one of the best movie fight scenes ever as Max and the gladiatorial Blaster face off with maces chainsaws and anything not nailed down inside Thunderdome.

  • Risky Business [1983]Risky Business | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £14.12   |  Saving you £-0.13 (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon

  • The Green Berets [1968]The Green Berets | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £7.19   |  Saving you £6.80 (94.58%)   |  RRP £13.99

Anyone who fought in Vietnam can tell you that the war bore little resemblance to this propagandistic action film starring and codirected by John Wayne. But Green Berets itself is not nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest; critics roasted its gung-ho politics while ignoring its merits as an exciting (if rather conventional and idealistic) war movie. Some notorious mistakes were made--in the final shot, the sun sets in the east!--and it's an awkward attempt to graft WWII heroics onto the Vietnam experience. But as the Duke's attempt to acknowledge the men who were fighting and dying overseas, it's a rousing film in which Wayne commands a regiment on a mission to kidnap a Viet Cong general. David Janssen plays a journalist who learns to understand Wayne's commitment to battling Communism, and Jim Hutton (Timothy's dad) plays an ill-fated soldier who adopts a Vietnamese orphan. --Jeff Shannon

  • The X Files: Season 2 [1994]The X Files: Season 2 | DVD | (11/10/2004) from £14.93   |  Saving you £20.06 (134.36%)   |  RRP £34.99

Season Two, the 1994-95 run, of The X Files was the one where creator Chris Carter, having had a surprise hit when he expected a one-season wonder, started trying to make sense of all the storylines he had thrown into the pile in the first year. Moreover, he had to cope with Gillian Anderson's maternity leave by having Scully get abducted by aliens (back then, a pretty fresh device) for a few episodes and come back strangely altered. The season also inaugurated the tradition of opening ("Little Green Men") and closing ("Anasazi") with the show's worst episodes, both pot-boiling attempts to keep the alien infiltration/government conspiracy balls up in the air while seeming to offer narrative forward-thrusts or revelations. But it's also a show noticeably surer of itself than Season One, with its stars reading from the same page in terms of their characters' relationship and attitudes to the wondrous. Scully's no-longer-workable scepticism finally starts to erode in the face of Mulder's increasingly cracked belief. There are fewer marking-time leftover-monster-of-the-week shows--although we do get a human fluke ("The Host"), vampires ("3"), an invisible rapist ("Excelsius Dei") voodoo ("Fresh Bones")--and the flying-saucer stories at last seem to be going somewhere. The powerful two-episode run ("Duane Barry", "Ascension") features Steve Railsback as Mulder's possible future, an FBI agent burned out after a UFO abduction who has become a hostage-taking terrorist, which climaxes with Scully's disappearance into the light. The standout episode is also a stand-alone--"Humbug"--the first and still most successful of the show's self-parodies (written by Darin Morgan, who had played the Flukeman in "The Host"), in which the agents investigate a murder in a circus freakshow, allowing the actors to make fun of the mannerisms they have earnestly built up in a run of solemn, even somnolent, explorations of the murk. Other worthy efforts: "Aubrey", about genetic memory; "Irresistible", a rare (and creepy) straight psycho-chiller with little paranormal content; and "The Calusari", a good ghost/mystery. Rising deputy characters include Nicholas Lea as the perfidious Krycek and Brian Thompson as the shapeshifting alien bounty hunters. Notable guest stars: Charles Martin Smith, C.C.H. Pounder, Leland Orser, Terry O'Quinn, Bruce Weitz, Daniel Benzali, John Savage, Vincent Schiavelli, Tony Shalhoub. --Kim Newman

  • Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens Classics [1962] [DVD] BBC TV SeriesOliver Twist - Charles Dickens Classics | DVD | (22/08/2017) from £9.85   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

The first BBC television adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, Constance Cox's adaptation of Oliver Twist (1962) is now available for the first time to own on DVD. Starring Bruce Prochnik and BAFTA nominees Max Adrian and Peter Vaughan. Constance Cox s uncompromising 1962 adaptation of Dickens tale of a gang of orphan boys turned to crime changed the face of British Sunday teatime viewing. Her unvarnished depiction of despair and depravity in the back alleys of 19th-century London, and the cruel divide between rich and poor, shattered expectations of cosy family drama. But this is Oliver as Dickens intended, without the enforced jollity of the blockbuster Lionel Bart/Carol Reed musical. Max Adrian stars as villainous Fagin, Peter Vaughan an indelibly brutal Bill Sikes, Bruce Prochnik a gentle Oliver, Melvyn Hayes a spry Artful Dodger, and Carmel McSharry the trapped and powerless Nancy. In support are Willoughby Goddard as bullying beadle Bumble, Gay Cameron as kindly aunt Rose Maylie, John Carson s cowardly Monks and Donald Eccles bitter undertaker Sowerberry. This landmark BBC production, released for the first time on DVD, was a gritty game-changer that raised the bar and stretched the boundaries of TV adaptation and serial drama.

In the late 1960s and early 70s, a bizarre alliance between the Filippino movie company Hemisphere and the American exploitation outfit Independent International yielded a series of weirdly interconnected horror movies, most of which work the word Blood into the title. The Filippino items are strangely fascinating vampire and mad scientist pictures with oddball colour effects and a mix of naive serial-style thrills and extreme-for-the-era sex and gore; the American efforts, from director Al Adamson, are shoddier, thrown together from offcuts of previous pictures, and are lead-paced but nevertheless curiously appealing. Gaze in awe at mutant killer trees, slobbering hunchbacked servants, faded matinee idols, stripper-turned-actress heroines with concrete blonde hairdos, evil dwarves, John Carradine or Lon Chaney, footage cut in from completely different films, Dracula and Frankenstein meeting hippies and bikers, red filters when the vampires attack, chanting natives! Plus lots of exclamation marks! Plus lurid trailers! "A blood-dripping brain transplant turns a maniac into a monster!". Brain of Blood does exactly what it says on the tin. It was made in Hollywood when a Filippino blood movie fell through and the distributor needed a substitute. --Kim Newman
