Unlike the cut-throat competition of Pop Idol and Fame Academy, this is a cosy step-by-step guide to singing, with the Grants adopting cuddly teacher personas. The two students are not your everyday pop wannabes either, having seemingly been dragged in from stage school rather than the street. The feature climaxes with the pair putting into practice Carrie and David's seven steps to success (ranging from breathing technique to vocal range) by professionally recording tracks such as Williams's "Angels" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful". The show includes advice from some of the Grants' most recent and successful students—among them Will Young, Melanie C and Lemar--and there are also brief guidance segments on topics such as whether it's safe to sing with a cold. Critics might say that a programme such as this simply encourages more second-rate karaoke singers to dream of pop stardom; but at the very least it might ensure that future pop-reality shows aren't short of talent. On the DVD: You Can Sing's somewhat lacklustre main feature is boosted by the interactivity of the extra material included on the disc. The songs "Angels" and "Beautiful" can be practised at home in karaoke-fashion, with the lyrics flashed on to the screen. There's also the opportunity to feel what it's like to perform in front of a roaring live crowd.   One of Woody Allen's best-loved films, this won three richly deserved Oscars* (for Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest and the screenplay), and is a joy from start to perfectly judged finish. Hannah (Mia Farrow) is a devoted wife, loving mother and successful actress. She's also the emotional backbone of the family, and her sisters Lee (Barbara Hershey) and Holly (Dianne Wiest) depend on this stability while also resenting it because they can't help but compare Hannah's seemingly perfect life with theirs. But with her husband Elliot (Michael Caine) becoming increasingly interested in Lee, it's clear that Hannah might have problems of her own. An unusually strong supporting cast includes Allen himself as Hannah's existentially conflicted ex-husband and Max von Sydow as a perfectionist artist, but it's Caine who practically steals the film as a middle-aged man behaving like a lovesick teenager. It also has some of Allen's greatest one-liners, with a philosophical discussion about the nature of good and evil getting shot down with How should I know why there were Nazis? I don't even know how the can opener works.

Flirty, feral Chingmy Yau gives an abusive jerk an impromptu vasectomy in front of cop Simon Yam, an impotent detective who vomits whenever he draws his gun. He's tracking a series of sex murders where all the male victims are missing their private organs when he falls in love with chief suspect Chingmy. She's subsequently recruited by the real killer, a hit-woman who targets rapists at large and practises on drooling sex-mad psychos chained up in the attic. When they finally head out for the real thing, they take out victims in a display of mid-air somersaults, cracking whips, flying ropes and flashing guns. This kind of foreplay attracts the lustful attentions of rival assassin Carrie Ng, a lesbian killer ready to abandon her purring sex kitten for the savage Chingmy. This is one of the most energetically gonzo Hong Kong logic-bombs ever made, a crazy melodrama that revels in absurd extravagance, sick humour (you may never eat link sausage again) and pure adrenaline driven displays of gymnastic action and orgiastic gunplay.
