  Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time it was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized $200 million budget), and the film arrived in cinemas with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon

  The Smashing Pumpkins: 1991-2000 Greatest Hits Video Collection visually charts the progress of the band from grunge rockers to AOR stars. Shot on Super 8, the grainy early videos ("Siva" and "Rhinoceros") depict the progressive psychedelia of their early sound. Despite the continuation of an alternative music style on Siamese Dream (the group's first album with Virgin), the videos from this era become more mainstream in a blatant attempt to get MTV airplay. Matching the commercial and accessible style of the album, the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness videos are big-budget numbers. Drawing on their long-standing fascination with 70s youth culture, the "1979" video provides another romanticised depiction of that period, while the awarding-winning "Tonight, Tonight" is a clever remake of Méliès Trip to the Moon. The epic style continues on later videos, with "Perfect" being a sequel to "1979". Also included is the harrowing short film by Jonas Akerlund, "Try" (a 15-minute extended version of the "Try, Try, Try" video), which follows the last days of a homeless, pregnant young woman. Also included are live performances from their final concert. This is a fitting anthology of both the Pumpkins' restraint and excess. On the DVD: Due to the extensive number of bonus features available with each video (including commentaries, outtakes and behind the scenes footage), the initial selection process is far from straightforward, which is why the title menu includes a Help option to guide the viewer through the complex procedure.   The Gathering", the feature-length pilot episode for Babylon 5, still ranks amongst the best of introductions to any TV science fiction show. In 1993 there was just nothing else to compare with its wall-to-wall CGI effects backed up by eye-popping architectural and interior production design, costumes, alien make-up and hairstyles. A couple of flat performances let down an otherwise intriguingly cast ensemble, but these problems would vanish in the series. Here, character introduction and development was refreshingly left to fend for itself within an elaborate narrative structure that kicked-off several plot threads at once. Creator Michael Straczynski ambitiously starts proceedings with a multi-layered mystery concerned with the nature and destiny of the soul. Political shenanigans, trigger-happy action stereotypes and wavering physics linger in the viewer's memory, but the tantalising tale told by smooth Commander Sinclair (Michael O'Hare) about the "hole in his mind" makes the strongest impression. Considering how convoluted the show's mysteries would become, "The Gathering" remains an essential starting point. On the DVD: Babylon 5: The Gathering is presented here in its 1998 Special Edition version. However, nowhere on the packaging is this stated. In fact, the back-cover credits are incorrect: apart from anything else, this version features a new score by Christopher Franke and not Stewart Copeland's original. Special effects and sound quality are also superior to the original version, even if still only presented in 1.33:1 ratio and two-channel Dolby.--Paul Tonks
