Field of Dreams is, in the words of its makers, a baseball film that "isn't about baseball". Rather, it's a magical film that works its spell on all but the most hard-boiled of viewers, an altogether superior slice of apple-pie sentimentality. Kevin Costner plays a young Iowa farmer who finds himself pestered by a whispering voice urging him, "If you build it, he will come". With the consent of an uncharacteristically supportive Hollywood wife (Amy Madigan) he sets about building a baseball diamond in the middle of his land. This action invites the prospect of bankruptcy--however, it also invites the spirit of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, a baseball superstar disgraced following his role in the 1919 World Series scandal. The supernatural voices continue to urge Costner to "go the distance"--and he seeks out reclusive writer Thomas Mann (James Earl Jones) and "Doc" Graham (Burt Lancaster), impelled by purposes he is as yet unable to divine. Field of Dreams works because it touches so endearingly on themes of redemption, inner peace and the possibility of second chances--the "dreams" which elude most of us. It also cites baseball as an idyllic metaphor for all that is decent and constant about America. Costner gives immense plausibility to an utterly, deliberately implausible scenario. On the DVD: Presented in anamorphic 1.78:1, the vivid, almost unnaturally natural Iowa colours are depicted to vivid effect (much of the diamond grass had to be painted green when it died). Generous extras include a making-of feature, an interview with WP Kinsella, author of the novel on which the book is based, and Costner. Director/writer Phil Alden Robinson also provides a director's commentary in which he describes the logistical difficulties of assembling 1500 automobiles for the memorable final scene. --David Stubbs

Sort of comedy, sort of not, Mo' Money--cowritten, coproduced and costarring Damon Wayans--concerns a loser who takes an entry-level job at a credit company to impress a girl and soon gets caught up in fraud and blackmail. Marlon Wayans, Damon's brother, costars as a confederate in the chicanery. The film is meant to be both a jokefest and an edgy drama--the criminal activity is treated as a dark and serious matter--but the end result is that Mo' Money succeeds on neither level. --Tom Keogh

Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time, Waterworld was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized 200 million US dollars budget), and the film arrived in cinemas with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon

Renowned British filmmaker Terence Davies' most ambitious film to date, SUNSET SONG, adapted from the classic novel by Scottish writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon, is set for release in the UK and Ireland on 4 December 2015 through Metrodome Distribution. The film will receive its World Premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival; a UK Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival where it screens in Official Competition, plus a special Scottish Premiere closer to release. SUNSET SONG stars Agyness Deyn (PUSHER and the Coen Brothers' forthcoming HAIL, CAESAR), Peter Mullan (TYRANNOSAUR, WAR HORSE) and Kevin Guthrie (SUNSHINE ON LEITH). Told with gritty poetic realism by Britain's greatest living auteur, Terence Davies, SUNSET SONG laments the devastation of war and pays fine tribute to the endurance of the land. Set in a rural Scottish community, SUNSET SONG is driven by the young heroine Chris (Agyness Deyn) and her intense passion for life, the unsettled Ewan (Kevin Guthrie) and for the unforgiving land. The impact of the First World War is felt from afar, bringing the rapidly changing modern world to bear on this community in the harshest possible way. Yet, in a final moment of grace, Chris endures the great hardships. Now a woman of remarkable strength, she is able to draw from the ancient land in looking to the future. SUNSET SONG is an epic in emotional scale and deeply romantic at its core.
