  • The Shipping News [2002]
    Helen Lawson 05 Apr 2005

A film to warm your heart. Judi Dench as always shines out. Kevin Spacey is also well cast starting out as a no hoper but finding fullfillment and happiness in the remoteness of Newfoundland.

  • The Rules of Attraction [2003]
    David MacLennan 03 Apr 2005

Damn this is one slick film, imagine crossing american pie with requiem for a dream and your getting warm. Rules of attraction has some mind blowing cinematography, a sexy cast, drugs and very dark humour. Seeing james van der geek (dawson from "dawsons creek") as a coke dealing nutcase is quite surreal however none the less he pulls it off well despite it being such a contrast from the more flimsy limp roles he is used to playing.

  • Belleville Rendez-vous [2003]
    N. Moghaddam 31 Mar 2005

Weird and wonderful, this Gallic animation strikes a rare balance between innocent charm and wry observation. It is playful and sweetly humourous, yet has a sinister edge, and blurs the distinction between adult- and child-oriented entertainment. The bottom-up perspective that the viewer is afforded (with little dialogue, and an absence of explanatory narrative) determines that, no-matter your age, you will perceive the film as an enraptured child might: feeling your way through a semi-coherent world. This impression is strengthened by the comically exaggerated features and motions that characterise the sumptuous artistry of the animation. Chomet combines a classic look and feel with modern techniques to establish an original style, rich in detail. He succeeds in crafting a touching tale and lovable characters without resorting to the industry-standard templates. Watch out for references to the Fleischer Studios (especially the jazz-flavoured Betty Boop), and to the house of mouse - you won't find anything as joyfully eccentric as this emerging from the latter.

  • The Ultimate Pixar Collection: The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., A Bug's Life (Disney Pixar)
    Kim Cushing 31 Mar 2005

Humour and creativity go hand and hand in these jammed packed, fun filled feature length animations for the whole family to enjoy. I'm long past being a kid but with films like these the kid in me can explode into life again and laugh out loud. Funny, witty and characters to boot these four films are winners through and through. You'll laugh out loud, cry and be rooted to the spot. Make sure you have plenty of popcorn as you won't want to leave your seats. Only you can decide which one is your favourite but for me it's a tough choice and I don't want to put myself through the task of deciding. All four film are truly amazing.
Pixar has created yet more incredibly monstrous fishy tales that are a must see, don't be a dead ant and miss out!!!

  • Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot [1989]
    Charlie Lass 31 Mar 2005

These extensive and faithful adaptations of the 1920's mysteries allow both the uninitiated greenhorn and the Christie connoisseur to revel in Poirot's sleuthing as it was intended. David Suchet's intelligent and respectful portrayal of the awkward Belgian makes such compelling viewing that it is not until the deliciously satisfying unmasking at the end of each episode that normality resumes. Backed up by the best sets and supporting actors around, this extensive collection makes for some of the most gripping light relief available.

  • Saw (Uncut, Theatrical Version) [2004]
    Amanda Rannie 31 Mar 2005

SAW is a film which could easily have passed you by due to lack of hype. Quite often, great films are not seen as 'great' until word of mouth spreads and lots of people start watching them. I urge you to watch!

When you do watch SAW you should be prepared to feel uncomfortable in more ways than one. For what is essentially a suspense/thriller, there is a lot of blood and gore (perhaps a bit unnecessarily at times) and some nasty deaths involved so stay away if you are feint hearted! That said, you will be well rewarded for sticking with it. The plot is tense and exciting, not 'run of the mill' and the twists (and there are a few) are truely fantastic. I have only watched two films that have had me screaming at my TV and this is one of them.

I watch a lot of films and SAW is the first film in a long time that has got me really excited. I was on my mobile recommending it as soon as the credits were rolling and I've been recommending it to people left, right and centre ever since, and I'm sure you will be to.

  • The Royle Family - The Complete Box Set
    John Purslow 25 Mar 2005

One of the funniest sitcoms ever. Almost entirely shot in a single room, it's a distillation of the pathos and bathos of daily Northern working-class life. The writing is excellent, the acting superbly realistic and underplayed. It will make you laugh out loud, snigger uncontrollably, repeat catchphrases, evoke personal memories and even shed a tear or two.
If it doesn't, you're either a stone-hearted cretin with a humour bypass or, as Jim Royle might say, a southern nancy-boy.

  • National Treasure
    Alison Bruton 24 Mar 2005

An action packed mystery adventure, good viewing from start to finish. This is an easy going film that is really enjoyable, although sometimes a bit far fetched never the less it was definitley worth the watch, a bit of a grown up style goonies! Nicholas Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates, a treasure seeker, the search for an old treasure chest has been a long one, his father had given up the search a long time ago, as every clue they found led them to yet another clue, and another... it was given up as a bad job ... but when Benjamin hears of a plot to find and steal the treasure, instigated by Sean Bean, the race is on to find the treasure first - let the treasure hunt begin!! Recommended viewing.

  • Man On Fire [2004]
    Alison Bruton 24 Mar 2005

Wow!!!! I havn't seen a film this gripping for a long time! It was like being on a roller coster there were so many twists and turns to the plot. Denzel Washington is superb, he plays Creasy an ex CIA agent, now a drunk has-been, although with the help of his friend, played by Christopher Walken, he is hired as a body-guard for a lovable young girl played by Dakota Fanning (excellent!)in corrupt Mexico City. Albeit inevitable he eventually befriends her and begins to get his life back on track - just as she is kidnapped - the ransom is set, but the trade off does not go to plan, the money is stolen before the swap, and the kidnapper presumes he has been double crossed - and thats were it starts getting interesting - Creasy will do anything to avenge the kidnapping this film is an absoulute MUST - I defy anyone not to enjoy it!!!

  • Monkey! - The Complete Series
    David Bennett 23 Mar 2005

This is TV nostalgia at it's very best. The punkiest Monkey that ever popped onto our screens. There are a whopping 52 episodes in this DVD set which covers all of those aired in the UK and 13 that weren't. The DVD's are well presented in a sturdy box that looks good on the shelf.

Anyone who has seen these shows will undoubtedly have this on their "to buy" list. I knew few children who weren't pretending to be Monkey following a screening of this show on it's original run. Watching it again as an adult, it's even funnier than I ever remembered.

Pigsy and his overindulgence, Sandy's philisophical musings, Tripitaka's outbursts and especially the cheek of Monkey. As if this wasn't enough, the music is fantastic. Closing credits have never been so much fun as when they are accompanied by "In Gandhara, Gandhara, they say it was in India...."

The extras are limited and repeated on each disc but with TV this good, who needs them?

When I was a child, the nature of Monkey was irrepressible. With these DVD's, it still is.

    Laura 23 Mar 2005

  • 24: Series 2
    darren murphy 23 Mar 2005

The series was an excellent follow up to the first to which it had a lot to live up to.I found myself watching episode after episode as I could not wait so for me it was more like a very long film than a series. Jack was once again in epic form which left me asking why has Kiefer been at in the wilderness for so long. If you liked the first series you'll love this and if you have not seen the first, WHY!!!. Great entertainment.

  • The Day After Tomorrow - Two Disc Edition [2004]
    David Cook 22 Mar 2005

This fascinating and futuristic film has the potential to cover all ages from 1-90, though some of the scenes did seem terribly unrealistic at best. The entire cast are (to be truthful) not the best well-known people in the acting industry today.

Overall the film does do justice over the fact that global warming is upon us and does show how we can deal with the traumatic phenomenom that is arising. Excellent action/Educational documentary film.

  • Fahrenheit 9/11 [2004]
    John 21 Mar 2005

Fahrenheit 9/11 is a shocking documentary that uncovers some interesting facts about George Bush, his family and business relationships and sheds a new light on the reasons behind the US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq.
Why were the only aircraft flying in US airspace after 9/11 carrying Bin Ladens family?
If 15 of the 19 men wanted for the 9/11 attacks are Saudi nationals, why did the US invade Afghanistan?
I would recomend this documentary to any free thinking American who is puzzled and/or concerned by the Bush administration.

  • Gigli [2003]
    a wardle 20 Mar 2005

Gigli is an entertaining and sometimes genius story of a crook (afflek) who falls for and eventually seduces a lesbian hit-woman (lopez). dirctor Martin brest has created a masterpiece of modern cinema with career-defining performances from long-time oscar deservees afflek and lopez. With some subtle and engaging cameos from christopher walken and al pacino, Gigli is a rich, intelligent and always entertaining example of what hollywood doesn't make often enough- watch it and be inspired.

  • Birth [2004]
    a wardle 20 Mar 2005

Criticised last year in the U.S because of its sensitive nature, Birth is a tender, intense and sometimes gripping drama from director Jonathon Glazer. It tells the story of anna(kidman) who, ten years after her husbands death, is about to remarry (huston) but has a chance meeting with a ten year old boy who claims is her husband re-incarnate-at first anna shrugs off the statement as proposterous , but as the woman and boy become close, anna starts to doubt herself and her own beliefs. Birth is a subtle and convincing tale of a woman still grieving after 10 years and the film itself has some moments that perfectly capture the fragility of human emotion-superbly performed by the three leads and supporting cast of anne heche and lauren bacall, with an inspired score by alexandre desplat and truly gorgeous visuals filmed in and around new york, Birth is a genuinely engaging and beautiful film entirely un-deserved of any claims of 'in-decent material' as one american journalist said.

  • 2046
    ALEX WARDLE 20 Mar 2005

This truly sublime drama/sci-fi romance film from director Wong Kar Wei (In the mood for love) is one of the years best films so far-it tells the story of a failing writer in 1960's hong kong who becomes infatuated with a prostitute who lives in the appartment next-door and steadily, the two build a strong sexual relationship-but when their connection wavers he begins to delve deep into the world of science-fiction and creates an imaginary story inspired by his own life. Not only is this film subtely emotional and grittily real at the same time, it also has the most beautiful cinematography shown on the big screen so far this year- a must have for fans of Kar Wei or anyone who loves their love story with a heap of oriental elegance and class.
