With the slinky white leotards, the pastel set and the references to toning and firming, yoga purists might be quick to dismiss Barbara Curries Seven Secrets of Yoga as yoga for middle England. Yet Barbara Currie is the Delia Smith of the yoga world--its not just that what she does works, but she knows exactly how to make it work for the rest of us. Though the title implies that this is a session divided into seven segments, there are in fact more than seven parts: a choice of two 10-minute miracles (beginners and advanced) recommended to start the day, followed by a series of six short sequences designed to work either as a sequence a day, or together in an entire, comprehensive session. Curries precise instruction covers balancing the body and mind, working the lower back and toning bottom and thighs, toning the tummy and waist, working the arms and neckline, stretching the entire body and relaxing. Though the focus appears to be toning up, the real surprise is at the end when Currie cleverly reveals the seven secrets: yoga is good for shape, weight, energy, relaxation, concentration, flexibility and youth. This is a succinct and inspiring explanation of the philosophy of yoga.--Lorna V

In Kate's Cardio Combat, the winner of Big Brother 3 Kate Lawler certainly looks the part; with a tanned and toned body, blonde hair and a natural affinity for cropped tops and trousers. Though obviously intended for women who want Lawler's body, and men who might want a physique to attract women with great bodies, it's unclear as to exactly whom this will really appeal. Lawler might claim this is for men who wouldn't be seen dead in a leotard doing yoga. But will they be seen dead flaunting this title on their shelves? Trainer and copresenter Rhydian Lewis has created a 50-minute all-round session intended to work heart and lungs, burn body fat, develop strength, and tone the body. The session starts with an energetic warm-up and goes into press-ups ten minutes into the session, moves into lively kicks, then targets abs and thighs, and finally winds up with a cool down. It'll certainly work up a good sweat, but whether it wows or not depends on the extent to which Lawler can occupy the viewer's attention. Despite clearly lapping up the novelty, Lawler is by no means a natural presenter. Trying too hard to impress with lame comments and exaggerated facial expressions, she is too self-absorbed to engage in any playful interaction or flirtation--which is, after all, what she's best known for. On the DVD: Kates Cardio Combat on disc comes with an extra ring workout where Lawler finally loosens up and is more natural and playful. As for the so-called interview, this amounts to Ms Lawler articulating a few sentences on allocated subjects. On Big Brother: "one of the most exciting experiences"; on love: "It scares me"; on boxing: "I really love boxing." Anyone who voted for her will wonder why they bothered. --Lorna V

At the risk of offending hard core yogaphiles who disapproved of Geri Halliwell's common touch, it's difficult to sneer at Geri Body Yoga--the follow-up to her first yoga offering. Every detail, from the ace location in California to clear simple instructions by teacher Katy Appleton, makes for an exceptional quality production. Thankfully, this time round the incessant Geri-babbling is limited, though there is considerable cheeky flirting with the camera. Still, Geri's body looks far from painfully thin, and it's reassuring to see a star who isn't flaunting a surgically-enhanced cleavage. The graceful Appleton, a former dancer, deftly combines demonstrating and correcting Geri. Beginner Nate in the background looks like the production runner who was dragged in at the last minute, but doesn't do too badly. Despite excellent camera angles and seamless editing that make the routine easy to follow, this isn't yoga for total beginners. Instead of a slow start, Appleton kicks in with a more interesting warm-up than usual. The all-round yoga session moves onto an energetic Sun and Moon section, the mentally challenging Strength, the intense Bliss, and the final Chill. Appleton takes a classic approach and adapts it to appeal to fast urban living. The added Geri factor makes this ideal yoga for the Heat magazine reader. On the DVD: Geri Body Yoga on disc has a 14-minute location film which takes us from Geri's West Hollywood apartment to behind the scenes of the filming with producer/director Steve Kemsley. The transformation of Cloudy Malibu in California, from a simple location to a spa style makes great viewing. The DVD also enables you to customise your own yoga session if you don't have time to do the full 90-minute session. --Lorna V
Geri Halliwell's transformation from Spice Girl to hip babe owes as much to her taking up yoga--a step she shares with us in Geri Yoga--as it does to revamping her wardrobe. Where Madonna and Sting have led the craze in this field, Geri has decided to show us all the yoga way. The 90-minute Geri Yoga features yoga teacher Katy Appleton presenting two warm up sections, a core Hatha yoga class, relaxation, along with an interview with Geri on yoga as a lifestyle. The entire session appears unscripted, which means it captures the spontaneity of a lesson, yet it's presented in a slick manner from a modern airy studio. A former dancer with the English National Ballet, Katy Appleton's confident poise and ease diffuses Geri the star. Appleton manages to balance her instructions and attention between Tina (the beginner in the sessions) and the advanced Geri, enabling viewers to see how they can progress. Yoga aficionados will be impressed by the precision of Appleton's teaching and horrified by Geri's inane babbling. Unless you're a die-hard Geri fan who can forgive the inappropriate references to calories, you'll be waiting for Appleton to release Yoga without Geri. On the DVD: Geri fans will lap up the extended interview, while non Geri fans will be thankful for the isolated music score. There is also an additional session geared to re-energising and revitalising body and mind. --Lorna V

As well as dropping two dress sizes since leaving the Big Brother house, Jade Goodey's also dropped the incessant banter that made her so watchable. In Jade's Dance Workout, the Jade who doesn't take herself seriously is seriously presented as a dance-fitness coach. According to the work-out's sell, the Big Brother contestant loathes the gym and managed to lose weight and tone up thanks to dancing. Yet in the interview (featured on the DVD) Jade mentions a personal trainer... and a gym. Not surprisingly she neither looks nor acts the dance part. With four funky guys strutting their fab professional dance bodies, unfortunately Jade is shown up for what she is: inept. Jade aside, an ace soundtrack, great moves and an accessible work-out (featuring a fun 10-minute warm-up, a 30-minute work-out that isn't too demanding and a five-minute toning cool-down) make this a fun way to get moving and master some flash stuff for the dance-floor. In fact, had this been presented by the choreographer himself, Fame Academy's Kevin Adams, this would have had huge appeal. On the DVD: a so-called interview simply features a few sentences on a list of subjects, without capturing Jade's humour. Most revealing, and certainly the only interesting section of the entire DVD, is the behind-the-scenes feature, which confirms this dance charade is nothing but an ego-boosting job. --Lorna V
