  • After The Sunset [2004]
    Louis Wilson 15 Apr 2005

This is a fantastic film with lots of action, twists and suspense. It has lots of comedy through out. This would be my film of 2004, it"s a really great film. I would give it a 10 out of 10. As i think and many other people think that Piece Brosnan, really fitted the part of Max, and Woody Harrelson was great as the FBI agent. If anyone thinking of getting it on dvd it is a really great film.

  • The Mean Machine [2001]
    Dicky 13 Apr 2005

Mean Machine is THE best english film to come out in the past decade! The characters are all fabulously good at their roles and all have their own individual charm. The script is fantastically written and screams out class.

  • Open Your Eyes [1997]
    Ian Ward 13 Apr 2005

This is a fantastic (in the true sense of the word) mind-blowing piece of cinema. Remade as "Vanilla Sky", this original version is far superior. It does not follow the rules of genre, indeed you will only decide which genre it is once you have decided what the ending means to you. It is a movie which constantly keeps you guessing, scratching your head, and wondering what is going on. You may still be thinking about this several days later. This was a huge hit in Spain on its release, and has helped to make Penelope Cruz into an international star. Here's your chance to see why.

  • Bruce Almighty [2003]
    Duncan Skinner 13 Apr 2005

First-rate fun with Carrey returning to his trademark, full-blown mugging, with fine support from the ever appealing Jennifer Aniston, while Morgan Freeman makes the perfect God. Consistently funny throughout, and the DVD features half an hour of deleted scenes (all of it good, but sensibly trimmed.) The film's message? Be pleased with what you've got. Now, that's a pretty good message for all 'n' sundry, but we get it in just about every movie we see, and it's kinda weird when you realise it's the money grabbing Hollywood suits and multi-millionaire performers delivering the same message again and again to we humdrum nobodies. Control? What do you all think? Not a criticism of the movie, but it started me thinking.

  • Dragonfly [2001]
    Alison Bruton 13 Apr 2005

This was a powerfull film with Kevin Costner making an excellent performance. Kevin Costners wife dies on an aid mission when their bus goes over a cliff. Unexplainable or even paranormal - you have to decide - things begin to happen which leads Costner to believe his wife is trying to send him a message from beyond the grave. He eventually is drawn to traveling out to find the place of her death and only to find out things which he never expected. A rollercoster of emotions and a plot which is unpredictable and exciting. A must see movie

  • Shark Tale [2004]
    S. Thanopoulos 12 Apr 2005

Yeah, OK, there are a lot of laughs, and, yeah, the Scorsese/De Niro stuff is particularly fun, but 'Shark Tale' (like every other Dreamworks (3D) animated feature) falls way below the Pixar level. The script is functional, featuring the usual mechanics and messages, and as usual, they're getting by on the hip factor and relying on an all-star voice cast. I have less time for this than 'Shrek' due to the fact that it's CG fish on the tail of 'Nemo', so while I pretty much enjoyed it, I kinda despise Dreamworks for making this, AND it's the second time they've pulled this trick (I'm refering back to 'Antz', here.) What's next, 'The Amazings'? Bottom line: Pixar = 6 instant classics, Dreamworks = 4 OK offerings. Let's hope 'Madagascar' is a step up, however, in our world of brand this brand that, chances are the finger is hovering above the Hollywood Instant Replay Button.

  • The Bourne Supremacy [2004]
    Edward Faulkner 12 Apr 2005

A high paced action thriller that carries on beautifully from the mood set by the Bourne Identitiy. The action never lets up, a truly relentless film. Highly recommended despite the rather fruitless attempts at humour. A great addition to any DVD collection.

  • The Phantom Of The Opera
    Clare 12 Apr 2005

Wow!! What a movie. I have on many occasions seen the London West End Show and thought that it was a must for me to go and see this movie. Well i have to give it a top rating as i don't think they could have got the movie any closer to Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End Show. Gerrard Butler played the Phantom and gave it his all along with all the other members of the cast. This is one i will be purchasing on DVD as soon as possible.

  • Dark Water [2003]
    S. Thanopoulos 12 Apr 2005

Hideo Nakata follows up the whole Ring Thing with something simpler but just as terrifying.
'Dark Water'(AKA 'Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara') is an excellent example of Less Is More - why have someone with rotted features stalking your heroes around and around, when just ONE glimpse, done with the utmost knowhow, will ensure that the moment will stay with the viewer forever. Nakata does so much with so little - everyone in the film world should take note, especially Dreamworks, who are set to remake it (YAWN...)
Superbly shot, perfectly played, and disturbing with a capital BWAHHHHHH!!

  • Look Who's Talking / Look Who's Talking Too / Look Who's Talking Now [1989]
    Carly Taylor 12 Apr 2005

The babies are cute and funny. Travolta brings a fantastic performance as usual and the chemistry between hima nd Alley is spot on. Great for light family entertainment!

  • The Quatermass Collection - The Quatermass Experiment / Quatermass 2 / Quatermass And The Pit
    Peter Wakely 12 Apr 2005

The father of British television sci-fi. Incredibly influential on both British and American sci-fi dramas. Just a pity that only two episodes of the first series survive.

  • Blood In Blood Out [1993]
    Wasim Afzal 12 Apr 2005

This was a good movie. It had the true life telling of "Boys In The Hood", while showing a bit more sense of honor, pride, and bravery relating to the street that you usually can't find in movies. The acting was a bit overdone, but it doesn't take away from the film. It's an instant classic that I've watched too many times to count. After my VHS version of the movie wore out I went and got the DVD. Compelling dramatic performances by all. Realistic, entertaining, dramatic, suspenceful, exciting, rollercoaster ride type of movie that took me through almost every emotion.

  • La Haine (Special Edition) [1995]
    Wasim Afzal 12 Apr 2005

I have never seen anything like this one. The first image strikes us right in the face: the world, lost in a emptiness of black, is covered by the blowing slo-mo flames of a cocktail molotov. The story may look simple. But that is the exact way it wants to be. Here we have a journey into the places hate lives. Here we journey through the deep entrails of hate, which grows, and cannot be stopped. When you think everything is right, everything is wrong. When you find peace, war seeks us. Here we are close-up to the ghettos we want to avoid, at the same time people who live there are always thinking of revenge, even if they are subject of social and physical abuse. Technically the movie is genius, beautifully shot in black and white, with a great music selection and three great leads, which look and think like they were really from the streets. Some scenes stroke me particularly (the opening shot, the camera wandering over the rooftops as the music spreads, the final scene) and will still strike me in the future. This movie has also a great amount of juice to be drunk, and requires multiple viewings to be seen properly. A work of genius, which reflects the quality of young values when they are given the proper treatment.

  • Everton vs Manchester United 1995
    Alex Kociuba 12 Apr 2005

1995 FA Cup Final. Everton beat Man Utd 1-0.

  • Funny Games [1998]
    Alex Kociuba 12 Apr 2005

Michael Haneke's Funny Games is an intentionally over-the-top disturbing film. It was made in protest against unnecessarily distressing and violent films, questioning the "audience"s" sense of decency and sensitivity to human life on camera. Funny Games is subtitled from Austrian (Deutsch) and follows a middle class family"s idyllic plans to stay at their country retreat. Set in the Austrian countryside beside a lake, the trip takes a sour twist with the introduction of two pleasantly-spoken young gentlemen calling to borrow some eggs. Without depicting any violence throughout this film what-so-ever, it still remains one of the most sinister, violent, sick films I have ever seen. If this doesn"t make sense, watch the film! It makes you squirm in your seat and feel more uncomfortable than any piece of media you will have seen. An extremely unique film which any lover of contemporary European cinema will appreciate. Apart from the overwhelming subject matter of this film, technically it is excellent; the acting, locations, editing and soundtrack are a treat for the eyes. One scene of an empty room and a flickering television is said to be one of the longest ever shots without a cut in cinema history. It is said that Funny Games was intended for the audience to walk out of the cinema before it ended; and if they didn"t the conclusion was that the cinema-goer was either literally mentally sick, or had been subjected to too many violent films prior. However, whether you watch this film for entertainment, cinematic or psychological purposes, you definitely won"t forget this film too soon.

Great film for all the family.

  • The Great Escape - Special Edition [1963]
    Jim Bloomfield 10 Apr 2005

What more can I say but what a film. Even having seen it every year since I was a nipper it is still a cracking movie even though you know what happens you still feel for the Tunnel King (Bronson) when the tunnel gives way for him. The staged pin pick up of Donald Pleasance as he tries to impress James Garner, the slip up from the Top Man (Attenborough) still keeps the heart pounding as he shows his papers and you know what happens next. The special edition gives it that added depth of reality as you see and hear real life stories that the great film was based upon. a great lads film (my wife can't stand the film) but carrying on the tradition my 12 year old son is hooked. A classic film to hand down the generations and even better to enjoy on quality DVD

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre [2003]
    S. Thanopoulos 10 Apr 2005

How gratifying to see this remake not only doing justice to the energy and anarchy of the fly-on-the-wall original, but being done in period, with cinematography and colour palette evoking the 1970s throughout. Slicked up enough for the multiplex crowd but without losing the original's relentless feeling of dread and inevitability, the film features a first rate cast and expert horror machinery. It fiddles around with the characters making up the film's monster family (with the exception of the iconic Leatherface, of course) and downplays the cannabalism, and it also gives a completely different spin on the fateful scene where our heroes pick up that hitchhiker, but all this works to give the remake it's own identity, whilst being true to Tobe Hooper's groundbreaking feature. After 30 years, the buzz is most definitely back!!

  • Dawn Of The Dead [2004]
    S. Thanopoulos 10 Apr 2005

I am generally very anti remake, but this is unexpectedly stunning. Same old, same old... but the "old" here is a classic being honoured, tweaked, and notched up into top gear, so the zombies run and run and run, while the cast act their hearts out... or have them eaten out, depending. It's top drawer nightmare material, standing shoulder to rotted shoulder with the source material. Good stuff and hard stuff (make sure you get the Director's Cut.) The extras meanwhile contain a couple of amusing pieces intended to er... flesh out the fiction, one of which features Richard Biggs as an anchorman going to pieces amidst armageddon (methinks it was the tragic 'Babylon 5' star's final performance.)

  • Anacondas: The Hunt For The Blood Orchid [2004]
    Lee Mullan 10 Apr 2005

Pure escapist fun. Lots of snake bait running round the jungle with a very loose plot. Sadly the anacondas are too CGI to be believable but the cast do their upmost to make the film work - and on the whole they do. The only major flaw is that you don't get Anacondas in Borneo!
